While I was enjoying much-needed time, sitting on my porch with my favorite drink in hand, spending time with my daughter..... I also had time to reflect on my teaching methods from my previous school years. I will be going into my 7th year of teaching middle school students and each year; it is my goal to ensure that my students are learning to their maximum academic potential.
Are you a parent who is struggling and stressed with teaching your child at home? Or maybe you are unsure of how to help them with homework... you have tried every strategy and nothing seems to work!
Are you a teacher in the classroom who is giving your all and teaching 'your good teaching' but your still students are still not grasping the content? You are feeling fed up with academic learning and ready to throw in the towel?

What is your teaching method in the classroom and at home? Teaching methods are comprised of the principles and methodology that are used by teachers (and parents) to enhance student's academic learning. These are strategies that are determined by the subject matter that will be taught according to the needs of the students.
I Do, We Do, You Do is one of my favorite strategies to use in the classroom!! Its fun, engaging, enriching, and provides just a correct amount of rigor in the classroom to promote academic achievement.
I Do, We Do, You Do is a teaching strategy for the classroom and home that serves as a gradual release of responsibility for the student, the child, and the teacher. This is a research-based, evidence-supported teaching method that puts the students in control of their learning. This is a strategy that includes demonstration, prompting, coaching, and practice.
You are probably wondering ... "Wow! This is great but how do I implement into my classroom or home?"
Implementing the "I Do We Do You Do" Teaching Method
I DO: At the beginning of each lesson or when new material is being introduced, the teacher has a prominent role in delivering the content The teacher or parent will model the best and most appropriate way of performing the skills of the new concept taught. This will set the tone for the lesson in many ways.
Students should not be writing during this time and focus their attention on what is being taught. This also helps students to process and understand the concept. It levels the playing field and students are listening attentively and watching the process.
WE DO: Once the teacher or the parent has modeled the lesson concept; the teacher (or parent) will work with the students to practice together and work through examples together. Students can also work with a classmate partner as well. This will allow the students a deepen level of learning to develop; students are able to do more than just listen. The teacher can guide, encourage and mentor students through the process without leaving them to conquer the hard task alone!
Implementing the I DO and WE DO together .... this is building the confidence for those students who are shy and children with special needs.
YOU DO: The last step in our gradual release method is to release your students" to work on their own (Productive Struggle). This is where students will demonstrate the initial level of understanding of the new concept. Students will work independently and practice what they have learned. The teacher(and parent) are still available to offer additional guidance and assistance but 90% of the work will be done by the student.
Remember... You will have to repeat this process daily for maximum results because repetition builds muscle memory!!
Whew!?! How yall feeling? I know that was a lot but your 'favorite educator's favorite educator" is always here to help:
